Woman putting money into a piggy bank
For the first time in my adult life. I’m finally debt free. Apart from normal monthly outgoings, I owe no one anything.

From 18 years old I had lived in my overdraft and thanks to three horrible cretins and my own stupidity, I racked up credit card bills in not only my name but also someone else’s (That debt has also been paid off in full).

It wasn’t because I didn’t have money, but more of a bad relationship with money. For almost 18 years I nestled in my overdrafts, paid off minimum payments and just accepted the debt. Then a few years back I had a mental shift. I wanted it gone.

I started with my overdraft. I put all my savings into it and then slowly but surely chipped away at the rest. Within a year it was gone. I still couldn’t bring myself to pay off more than the minimum amount of the card so instead, I opened a savings account and put money into that. Today I realised that the amount in the savings pot was £300 more than the credit card bill.

Ping. Ping. Ping. I transferred the money out of the account and the debt was gone.

It’s a weird feeling. It’s been like a badly fitting coat for years. You know the one, you’ll wear it to the shops, but it just doesn’t feel right.

I’m not writing this to show off, although I am proud of myself, but instead I’m writing this to show people it is possible to dig your way out of debt. You just need to find a way to do it. Mine just happened to be using savings to pay off the money rather than seeing it as a ‘bill’. I literally tricked myself into paying off my debt. I would see the money going into a savings pot like I would my mobile bill. Once it’s paid, it’s paid. EE/o2 definitely won’t be giving me the money back and neither should the savings pot.

In all honesty, my mindset around money has really improved over the last few years and I’m very grateful for it. I now have a monthly money meeting with myself, put all my outgoings to one side, pay into several savings pots and the rest is mine to buy snacks and storage.

My storage addiction will be the next thing that needs to go. Unless anyone can tell me how to build a house out of storage?

Anyway, I’m no money expert but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Speak to someone, a professional, or just have an honest conversation with yourself about it. It’s amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it.
Until next time,
Until next time.
